Study at Khon Kaen University in Northeast of Thailand The Northeast of Thailand, commonly referred to as Isan, is made up of nineteen provinces. The
word Isan denotes prosperity and vastness, which is appropriate considering that the Northeast
covers a total area of more than 170,000 square kilometers, roughly one-third of the entire country.
It borders on the Lao People's Democratic Republic and Cambodia to the East.
Isan is noted for being the center of an age-old civilization, with customs
dating back to prehistoric times. Relics and monuments still stand, attesting to.the splendors and
majesty of the ancient era. The Phra That Panom, Prasat Khao Phanom Rung, and Prasat Hin Pimai are
some of the most important in the area. The Ban Chiang village, where remains of
prehistoric skeletons and tools have been discovered, serves as the most
concrete evidence of a Bronze Age civilization flourishing 5,000-7,000 years
ago. The Northeastern ancient traditions and customs are also reflected in fairs andfestivals found nowhere
else in the country. These include the colorful Bun Bung Fai (rocket festival), the Candle Procession,
the Wax Castle Festival, and the Silk Festival. Khon Kaen Province is situated in the heart of Northeastern Thailand,
approximately 440 kilometres from Bangkok. Today the number of inhabit- ants in the city and its immediate
suburbs is approximately 352,000. Indeed, Khon Kaen is currently one of the
fastest-growing cities in the Northeast, due not only to its central position, but
also to a government initiative to pro- mote the city as a gateway to Indochina.
Furthermore, Khon Kaen has been designated as a regional institutional center
and is one of nine industrial cities in the country. The province is also home to
more than 200 government administrative agencies and state enterprises that
operate at the regional level. Khon Kaen University (KKU) was one of four regional universities established
in 1964 as part of a decentralized development plan for higher education in
Thailand. The campus is located in the Northwest sector of Khon Kaen, just
a few kilometres from the centre of the city. Situated in a most attractive park,
the campus covers approximately 900 hectares. From small beginnings, Kill
has grown enormously, and is today home to seventeen faculties, three academic support centers, two
academic services centers, a hospital and a research institute. In addition, several
new institutes are currently in the pipeline and will, in time, open the
University's door further to the public and increase its roles, responsibilities
and commitments to the region around it. Currently the number of students is
approximately 17,000 (including 1,700 postgraduates and about seventy students from
overseas). Although some students are housed in one of the 25 Halls of Residence, many students
choose to find their own accommodation off-campus. The Graduate School is the central unit in charge of coordinating and
supporting educational administration and management at graduate level. It also
maintains the burdens of designing programs and laying foundations for educational quality assurance, with a view
to developing academic an research advancement at graduate level, both
nationally and internationally. What is more, the Graduate School is a route
for students to discover manufacturing instructors, lecturers, qualified
academic specialists and administrators, and professional personnel, based on the
demand of the country. It holds particular emphasis on applied research, in
order to make a vast step 'bounding to excellence' at the world-class level,
and to instigate a reputation of being the hub of graduate education in the
region. This can be generated by efficient administration and management. KKU's reputation for research ensures that it can attract academic staff of the
highest caliber - many are internationally-recognized scholars in their fields.
This ensures that our graduate programs are at the forefront of knowledge,
encouraging students to explore the most recent developments in their discipline. The quality, breadth
and relevance of research make the university an obvious choice for graduate study. Graduate education also has a key role to play in developing the necessary knowledge and skills for
employment in areas ranging from education, social sciences, business, agriculture
and engineering to primary health sciences. KKU believes that high-quality
research and high-quality teaching are inextricably bound together, and this
philosophy is nowhere more evident than in graduate education. KKU graduates, whether
following taught or research programs, will come into contact with internationally-
renowned experts in their fields, both on the university staff and as part
of a stream of distinguished academic visitors to the campus. Our graduate
students receive a rigorous education within a sympathetic and supportive
ethos. They make an invaluable contribution to the cultural and academic
life of the university.
